The problem is that mouthwash is very ineffective at rinsing the sticky, biofilm-bacteria-laden plaque from your mouth. The plaque or biofilm is designed to protect the bacteria and it does a really good job. Hence, one must mechanically remove it and simply rinsing with mouthwash can’t get the job done. The next time you want to clean your kitchen table just pour water on it and watch what happens. Yes, you’ll remove some of the dirt but not nearly like you do when you wipe it down with a cloth.

Yes, mouthwash has improved over the years, but many have properties that can actually increase bad breath.  If alcohol is an ingredient, it drys the mouth and can actually increase bad breath by giving the bacteria more dead/dry cells to feed on. In Jan of 2009 Fox News reported that “alcohol-containing mouthwashes can contribute to the increased risk of the development of oral cancer.” Also harsh acids present in the more “effective” mouthwashes have been found to potentially have detrimental effects on long term oral health. So be sure to be selective.

The conclusion?  Not all mouthwashes are bad and moreover the good ones are a viable option as part of your oral care.  However even if you select the “best” option, please recognize that it just doesn’t even scratch the surface…literally, and does not come close to “brushing” any part of your mouth. 1.  A slight turn of the body when speaking to you

2.  Avoiding eye contact

3.  A slight rubbing of the nose

4.  Cutting the conversation short and making a quick exit.

5.  Last but not least…. the proverbial step back! People will actually back away from you even before you enter their personal space!

All these actions can be indicators that things aren’t going well. Is it your bad breath? Maybe. Of course it is possible that you have other issues but let’s face it, it could be as simple as bad hygiene! Look at it this way, if it is your breath, you can fix it in a snap!
