Facebook recently reported that the Clean your tongue, it smells like bum video has been viewed more than 2 million times.

BOZEMAN, MT September 8, 2016 — Encouraging children and adults alike to maintain healthy habits has arguably been the supreme perennial challenge faced by dentists, dental hygienists, and makers of oral care products for decades. That’s why when Tom Oechslin, CEO of Peak Enterprises, Inc, makers of TUNG Brush and Gel, found out about viral sensation Brushy Bear, he jumped at the chance to collaborate in spreading the word about tongue brushing.

“Brushy Bear already had one video that had been a big hit with dental hygienists,” Oechslin said, “and we couldn’t resist the idea of putting together another one they might fall in love with.”

Brushy Bear is the brainchild of Brad Gosse, CEO of Vector Toons, which makes and sells cartoon-style stock images online.

“Brushy Bear came about because I thought we could make dental hygiene education more fun,” said Gosse. “We tested the first video out with dental hygienists on Facebook and saw we had a hit on our hands when they started sharing the video like crazy.”

And that’s what led Gosse to seek out the makers of TUNG Brush and Gel.

Brushy Bear & Flossy Fox: Clean your tongue, it smells like bum“Brad approached us with the idea of using Brushy Bear and his sidekick, Flossy Fox, to teach people about the importance of tongue cleansing,” said Oechslin. “We couldn’t be more thrilled with the response.”

The video, which has been shared more than 11,000 times, also boasts more than 14,000 comments, the majority of which consist primarily of Facebook viewers tagging their friends. Recently, Facebook reported that the video had been viewed more than 2 million times.

“For us, informing people about the importance of tongue brushing is more than just a matter of talking about our products.” said Oechslin. “This step is a crucial component to a person’s overall wellness and confidence. It’s a big deal.”

For more than twenty years now, studies have shown that 90% of bad breath comes from bacteria that thrive on the tongue. As if the social consequences of bad breath aren’t bad enough, the health ramifications are significant.

Studies have shown that the gases released from the same bacteria on the tongue contribute to periodontal disease (also known as gum disease).

“Nearly half of all Americans over 30 are suffering from some form of periodontal disease,” Oechslin said, citing a 2012 study from the Centers for Disease Control.

Periodontal disease, bacteria’s gateway to the body’s circulatory system, has been linked to cancer, early births, and heart disease.

“Studies have shown that mechanical removal is the most effective method of reducing the biofilms where bacteria that contribute to periodontal disease and bad breath live on the tongue,” Oechslin said.
