• I WON’T…I MIGHT
  • I CAN’T…I COULD
  • I’VE NEVER….MAYBE I CAN

Did you ever find yourself having these mental conversations with yourself? These are just a few examples of the kind of mindset you might have about events, chances, relationships or challenges you may face during your lifetime, and how you perceive and approach these challenges is a direct result of that mindset!

Your mindset can even make the difference in success or failure and in joy or disappointment in many aspects of your life.

Two Types of Mindset

Thanks to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, and her remarkable work, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, understanding the power of our own individual mindset has become accessible and readily applicable to our lives. Even more importantly, it will help you flourish in those areas where you may have been struggling or stuck!

Essentially, there are two basic types of mindset – fixed or growth.

A fixed mindset means that we are static beings.  One believes that there is no real chance for change, for adaptation, or for, in many cases, acceptance of ways other than our own. Some of us may see that as being “set in our ways”, “stubborn” or even “scared”. And certainly, a fixed mindset indicates a fear of failure and and a bent toward perfectionism.

A growth mindset, on the other hand, loves challenge, is more open-minded and might take failure as a sign to persevere, “never give up”, “look at the glass as half-full or, at least, as refillable” – these are a couple of attributes of the person with a growth mindset.

Here are a few more differences in outlook:

  • Facing Obstacles:
    • Fixed Mindset – gives up easily
    • Growth Mindset – persists
  • Facing Challenges:
    • Fixed Mindset – avoids challenges
    • Growth Mindset – welcomes challenges
  • Facing Criticism:
    • Fixed Mindset – ignores criticism
    • Growth Mindset – uses criticism to improve
  • Making Extra Effort:
    • Fixed Mindset – avoids effort but expects success
    • Growth Mindset – goes the extra mile to succeed
  • Facing Success of Others:
    • Fixed Mindset – considers others’ successes to be threats
    • Growth Mindset – lauds others’ successes and learns from them
