Getting emotionally anxious and crying may ruin more than your mascara! According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), emotional anxiety could affect your dental health.

The AGD reports there’s a link between stress and dental health—stress is known to compromise the immune system, which fights against the bacteria that causes periodontal disease, making a person more prone to gum infection!

Studies completed at the State University of New York at Buffalo, the University of North Carolina and the University of Michigan, comprised of more than 1,400 volunteers, ages 25 to 74, explored how stress and coping abilities affect the risk for periodontal disease.

An interesting find from the study was that those at greatest risk for periodontal disease were those who were highly emotional in dealing with financial problems. Compared to those who had stress over work, marriage, children, people who were anxious about finances had the most severe periodontal disease, yikes!

But here’s the good news: Those who dealt with their financial woes directly and positively had no more risk of severe periodontal disease than those without money problems…whew!

And here’s even more good news: Brushing your tongue regularly can help reduce gum disease too! You see, your tongue loves to hide bacteria in all its nooks and crannies.
